HISTORY & CLASSICS

Beginning with ANZAC military advisors arriving in South Vietnam in 1963, the Vietnam War (American War) would become one of the longest military commitments in Australia’s history. The evidence of Australia’s involvement can be witnessed from the moving Long Tan cross to the unbelievable Cu Chi tunnel system.

Visits to historic museums, commemorative monuments and even former prisons, will present your students with the opportunity to not only engage with Australian history, but also experience the warmth and hospitality of a people who have slowly rebuilt their lives and the beautiful culture that they cherish and preserve.

The Highlights of Vietnam Trip

HANOI

Museum of Ethnology and the infamous Hoa Loa Prison Museum: Hoa Loa is also known as the ‘’Hanoi Hilton’’ was where former US presidential candidate John McCain was incarcerated for over 5 years.
Water Puppet Show: The tradition of water puppet theatre stems from a time when rice paddy fields were flooded and villagers would make entertainment by standing in the waist-deep water with the puppets performing over the water. Performances are accompanied by a Vietnamese orchestra playing traditional music using drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals.

One Pillar Pagoda: built in the 11th century in dedication to Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or Buddha od Compassion and reminiscent of a lotus blossom rising from a pond.
Temple of Literature: known as the first university of Vietnam built in 1070 by the Ly Dynasty to honor Confucius, sages and outstanding Vietnamese scholars.

HALONG BAY

Full-day sailing experience in Halong Bay:
– Set off to the ‘Jewel in the Crown of Vietnam’; board our private boat and then set sail, cruising amongst thousands of extraordinary limestone karst formations. Halong Bay was voted one of ‘The New7Wonders of Nature’ in 2011, and apart from the stunning sites to see and caves to explore you will also have the opportunity to kayak and go for a swim.

HOI AN

Hoi An’s colorful market: experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas of this busy market. We will have the opportunity to interact with the local sellers and learn about all the ingredients to be used in the cooking lesson later.
Red Bridge boat: a leisurely cruise (25 minutes) along the Hoi An River to the Red Bridge Cooking School. This is a chance to view local river life, so make sure your camera is handy.
Cooking school experience: The Red Bridge chefs first demonstrate each dish before we prepare the same dish ourselves. Included in the class is a brief introduction to Vietnamese food carving (plate decoration)
Biking tour to Cua Dai beach or An Bang Beach: for a scenic ride from the town center to Cua Dai Beach with the most stunning coastal shore of white powdery sands and clear waters. Spend some leisure time swimming or just relaxing as you enjoy the view of the ocean at sunset
Farming & Fishing Life Eco Tour: Starting at Tra Que Village, we will get a personal insight into the local farming communities. We set about joining the farmers in preparing their land for sowing, helping to fertilize the garden using seaweed from the local river and watering it in using huge tin cans strapped to our backs.
Leisurely cycling tour through the countryside witnessing local Vietnamese rural life first hand.
Board our Hoi An Eco-tour boat for a river cruise. Here we will meet and witness local fishermen working their craft, before enjoying a hands-on experience of traditional net fishing.
Transfer to a Vietnamese bamboo basket boat to ride down a coconut palm lined waterway.
Short walking tour to visit the ancient architecture of Hoi An: a fascinating combination of Vietnamese traditional characters with Chinese and Japanese influence. There are plenty to see in this delightful town, some of which are the famous Japanese Covered Bridges; the Pottery Museum; the 200-year-old Tamky House; the Chua Ong Pagoda; the vibrant market

SAIGON

War Remnants Museum: where we will see countless artefacts, photographs and pictures documenting the tragic Vietnam War.
Dieu Giac Orphanage: in city centre where many orphans are being brought up in Dist 2 of Sai Gon- Vietnam, where it shelters and cares for over 120 abandoned, orphaned or street children. They range from several months to 18 years of age and are of different ethnic groups and religious backgrounds. The children of the orphanage are taken care of by a group of Buddhist nuns and volunteers. All the children who reach school age, are sent to local school like other children.
Perform Buddhist ceremonials: to promote peace, luck. Incense and flowers provided. Lead by the first leader of Dieu Giac Padoga.
Cu Chi Tunnels: The Vietnamese are proud of their resolve in their prolonged history of struggle against invading armies, and the story of the people of Cu Chi is indicative of that spirit. The residents of Cu Chi then took their war underground, literally, developing a network of tunnels that, at its height, stretched as far as Cambodia and included meeting rooms, kitchens, and triage areas.
Travel to Tay Ninh to experience the midday service at the colourful head temple of the unique Cao Dai religion.
Saigon city tour of this vibrant city including the Reunification Palace (the former Presidential Palace of the President of South of Vietnam), the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Old Post Office.
